US studio Manica has unveiled the design for a 70,000-seat stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs NFL team, which will be topped with a transparent dome.

The fully enclosed venue, which will replace the team's iconic Arrowhead Stadium, is set to cost $3 billion and open in 2031. According to Kansas City Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt, the stadium will be a modern venue that aims to replicate the feeling, noise and tailgating experience of the existing stadium.

"It's spectacular," said Hunt. "It honors the rich legacy of this franchise while setting a bold course for the future of Chiefs Kingdom."

"While we're still finalizing many of the details, there are a few things we know for sure: it will hold 70,000 fans, it will still be the best place in the world to tailgate, and the whole building will be built for noise," he continued.

Unlike Arrowhead Stadium, the venue will be topped with a translucent roof made of 37,000 square metres of EFTE panels designed to "maximize visibility for military flyovers".

While enclosed, the new stadium's shape evokes the current stadium, with the geometry and shape designed to create a noisy environment.

Key Arrowhead characteristics including the "drum deck" and a roll of honour around the top of the stadium will be incorporated into the design.

Bucking the trend for NFL teams to consider urban locations, the Kansas City Chiefs stadium will remain outside of the city and be surrounded by parking lots.

These parking lots will be "built specifically to enhance the tailgating experience".

Manica is designing the stadium with HNTB as architect of record. The studios, which are both based in Kansas City, were selected ahead of a proposal from another Kansas City firm, Populous.

"This stadium is being designed not just for today's fans, but for the generations of Chiefs Kingdom to come – a place that reflects the passion, pride, and enduring strength of one of the greatest fan bases in all of sports."

Recently, numerous NFL teams have unveiled new stadiums, including the Washington Commanders, while the Buffalo Bills stadium is set to open later this year.
