Media personality and former Queer Eye host Tan France has released an 18-piece homeware collection with Singapore brand Castlery, which marks his first foray into furniture design.

France, who formerly guided fashion transformations on the Netflix show Queer Eye, told Dezeen the Castlery x Tan France Collection was informed by his British and South Asian heritage.

"I designed my current home, including some of the furniture in my home, and had the most incredible experience doing so," France told Dezeen. "Some of the items in this Castlery collection were items I wanted to make for my home but hadn't gotten to it yet."

The collection ranges from a modular Kagan sofa and an egg-like accent chair to the brightly coloured Anika table lamp and side tables informed by traditional wood turning.

Warm oak wood was used throughout the collection, along with a palette of earthy oranges and greens.

A scalloped arch can also be found in much of the detailing – a motif that France used to guide the overall collection as a nod to his South Asian roots.

"I mostly wanted to focus on a scalloped arch," said France. "It's something that is seen all over South Asia, and a muted version over all of England."

"So that was the jumping-off point, and it helped me keep the collection cohesive, as there was a clear North Star."

France said he came to the design experience with ideas already in mind and that his experience in fashion design made it an enjoyable, and somewhat similar, process.

"It felt so exciting designing homeware as opposed to what I've lived most of my life designing, which was clothes," France said.

"Honestly, with such comfort with designing clothing, the design of home goods felt quite natural, as I understand fabrications, colour story and function," he continued. "It's not too dissimilar a process."

Other objects in the collection include decorative vases, a low tea table with scalloped arches etched into its legs, and wool rugs.

France says bedroom furniture may be next.

"If they have me back, I'd love to design a bed and other bedroom furniture," he said. "I'd also love to design tableware, as I'm a very keen dinner host."

The collection joins other homeware designs recently launched by celebrities who have paired up with furniture brands to help guide the design process and manufacturing.

These include a rattan furniture collection by Pamela Anderson and Los Angeles furniture company Olive Ateliers and a collection by actor and comedian Julio Torres and furniture brand Sabai, which was informed by the experience of immigrating to New York City.
