Slanted facade encloses modular Czech home by Papundekl Architects

A tilted facade with large glazed openings was designed to bring an adjacent forest "directly into the interior" of this home in the Czech Republic by Prague-based Papundekl Architects.

Located in a South Bohemian village, the single-storey home is contained within a modular timber structure, which has been topped by a mono-pitch roof and clad with pre-weathered metal.

In response to the home's forested site, Papundekl Architects designed a tilted, north-facing facade that opens up to the forest at its rear, while a more-traditional facade overlooks the street.

"The core concept is to channel the immersive experience and serene atmosphere of the adjacent, north-facing forest directly into the home's interior," studio co-founder Jan Bárta told Dezeen. "By maximizing the glazing on the northern elevation, the facade effectively dissolves the boundary between the living spaces and the surrounding nature, making the forest a continuous backdrop to daily life."

According to the studio, the home's materiality was determined by a strict budget – encouraging the use of local, readily-available materials like timber and standardised glass.

This resulted in the dwelling's modular timber frame, which is arranged on a two-metre grid and lined on its northern edge with slanted columns.

"The material palette was driven by local context, availability, and cost efficiency," Bárta explained.

"Highly cost-effective elements such as the monopitch roof, asphalt roofing membrane, and standard thermal insulation blocks – offset the cost of the expansive glazed facade," he continued.

"Furthermore, this sloping facade avoids expensive custom solutions by utilising a standard commercial glazing system typically reserved for office buildings."

Inside, the home's spatial layout follows the structure's two-metre-wide modules, with the living spaces and bedrooms occupying two modules each to create four-metre-wide rooms.

Between them, the service zones, including the home's entryway, utility room, bathroom and storage spaces, have been limited to single, two-metre wide bays.

Each of the spaces are linked by a corridor that stretches along the open-plan kitchen and living spaces at the centre of the home to bedrooms at either end.

"The modular layout establishes a clear spatial rhythm and internal order, alternating between active living zones and functional service areas to dictate the choreography of movement within the house," Bárta said.

"Pragmatically, this strict repetition of partition walls, structural framing, and glass panels minimised material waste and significantly reduced overall construction costs."

A long corridor links the home's spaces

Light-coloured walls complement the home's exposed wooden structure to create a simple material palette for the interior, which is backed by expansive views of the forest.

Elsewhere in the Czech Republic, Mimosa Architects drew on a surrounding forest for its design of a rural cabin built from burnt wood and black metal, and BekArch converted a disused bakery workshop to create a skylight-topped apartment in Prague.
