Former Zaha Hadid headquarters to open as public arts venue in London

The Zaha Hadid Foundation is set to open a public arts venue within the former headquarters of the late Zaha Hadid's eponymous studio in London.

Located in London's Clerkenwell area, the new venue will serve as "a dynamic new hub for architecture and design" within the Grade II-listed Victorian school that was home to the studio for more than 30 years.

Architecture practice Studio KA has refurbished the ground floor, opening up the interior to improve circulation and restoring original building features.

New arts venue "will be where Zaha's legacy will live on"

"We're thrilled to see this next evolution for the Foundation at 10 Bowling Green Lane, from what was Zaha's home base to a new home for architecture and design in London," Zaha Hadid Foundation director Aric Chen said.

"It will be where Zaha's legacy will live on both through our programmes and exhibitions drawn from her archive, and through her forward-looking ethos as we actively engage with architectural culture today."

Set to open to the public next month, the newly renovated space will be inaugurated with a two-day symposium organised in collaboration with the Architectural Association and the Serpentine Galleries to mark the foundation's tenth anniversary.

Its programme is set to include a collection-based exhibition, curated by Catherine Howe and Libby Sellers, that will be dedicated to stage and set designs by Hadid and her studio.

Art commissions by the foundation will include an 11-minute video installation by London-based artist LionHeart, and a timeline of Hadid's life, work and influence realised by Pulitzer Prize-winning illustrator Mona Chalabi.

The events will be held across the building's newly completed galleries and display areas, alongside a learning space and lecture hall, which will also be used to host future exhibitions, talks, workshops and creative residencies.

Foundation also set to unveil visual rebrand

Throughout the venue, original features such as a fireplace and doorways have been reopened, while details including Z-shaped door pulls implemented by Hadid have been preserved.

In addition to its new venue, the foundation has rebranded its visual identity, which has been developed by Amsterdam-based design studio Experimental Jetset. It is also set to launch a new website designed by technology agency Made by ON.

The Zaha Hadid Foundation was founded by the late Hadid in 2013, before her passing in 2016.

In related news, Hadid's eponymous studio was renamed to ZHA earlier this year by studio principal Patrik Schumacher, following the conclusion of a legal battle with the Zaha Hadid Foundation.
