Objects with Narratives presents collectible design that looks "found rather than fabricated"
Belgian gallery Objects with Narratives has curated a texture-heavy exhibition at PAD London called What Remains?, featuring pieces from Ben Storms and Paul Cocksedge.
What Remains? marks the second show that Brussels platform Objects with Narratives has presented at design fair PAD London, which takes place annually in Mayfair's Berkley Square.

The emerging Brussels gallery's exhibition brings together a series of textured pieces united by amorphous shapes and patinated surfaces.
"Every piece was crafted in the present, yet many carry a sense of the past, as though found rather than fabricated," said Objects with Narratives.

Among the exhibitors is Belgian designer Ben Storms, who is known for his rough-hewn furniture that looks like jumbo pillows. Storms is presenting his most recent design, a cushion-like coffee table called Ex Hale, crafted from veiny red Mexican onyx decorated with mosaic veneer.
To create the piece, the designer used a hydroforming technique to blow up two pieces of metal sheet that were welded together and 3D-scanned to form a cushion shape.

After this, Storms used a CNC machine to mill the same shape from a block of stone.
"Ex Hale plays with our common notions of materiality," said the gallery. "The hard stone looks soft instead, an impression that is further enhanced by the delicate surface treatment."

Also on display is Critical Mass, a handmade Corten steel standing shelf by British designer Paul Cocksedge.
A trio of metal components were arranged to support three metal shelves, forming a piece that looks familiar to What Nelson Sees, a weathering steel installation by Cocksedge that was placed in Trafalgar Square for last year's London Design Festival.
"The Critical Mass series holds an energy, something on the edge of collapse or explosion," said Objects with Narratives.
Belgian designer Sofie Middernacht is showing a steel credenza, bench and duo of stools clad in gleaming crimson resin.
Middernacht works with discarded industrial materials to create her furniture, which is purposefully formed like archaeological artefacts.

Venezuelan artist Jojo Corväiá is presenting a trio of glazed vessels crafted from volcanic clay, a material central to his practice.
A host of other materials feature in the show, from shaggy mohair and wool lamps by Belgian practice KRJST Studio to lighting by Danish designer Karl Monies formed from patchwork slabs of copper.

"What Remains? asks what gives an object the sense that it might outlive the moment of its making: the material, the craft, or simply the possibility that some objects belong to no single time at all," Objects with Narratives concluded.
Objects with Narratives was founded by Nik and Robbe Vandewyngaerde and Oskar Eryatmaz, who opened their first permanent brick-and-mortar gallery inside a historic 1920s fur atelier in Brussels in 2023.
What Remains? is on until 18 October.
