Atelier cnS-LT Architects has completed the first phase of a renovation project at a historic site in China's Nanhai District.

Diejiao Ancient Street currently is marked by deteriorating structures, including Late Qing Dynasty brick-and-wood houses and modern multi-story concrete residences.

Lack of upkeep has left these buildings unsafe, with some residents adding makeshift steel structures or unauthorised expansions.

In the transformation process, the architect removed temporary shed roofs and relocated the main entrance closer to Diebei Park to improve accessibility.

The new layout optimises travel routes and unblocks internal roads, creating functional alleyways and extending them into the evolving community alongside main streets.

This project has been longlisted in the heritage project category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
