HyperSpace has converted Dark Matter in Tring, United Kingdom.

This project is a converted suburban garage that forms the work-from-home studio, Dark Matter.

The building's name refers to its innovative façade, which is formed of 850 pieces of charred wood.

"The process, called Shou Sugi Ban, prolongs the life of the wood by making it more resistant to moisture," said HyperSpace.

Gaps were left in between these wooden 'scales' to provide natural habitats for insects – with the aim of promoting biodiversity in the garden.

This project has been longlisted in the small project category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
