Lakeside Teahouse
Domain Architects has designed the Lakeside Teahouse, connecting old courtyards with a glass corridor-bridge in China.
Located in front of a hill, the Lakeside Teahouse is a site with two old houses with small courtyards facing a lake and gently sloped hills, just 100 metres from the lakeshore. The surrounding scenic area was renowned as a great example of traditional Chinese literati aesthetics.
The new teahouse allows guests to experience shifting views of the landscape as they walk along it, much like unfolding a long scroll painting. The timber-frame structures remain intact, except for the roof of one small volume.
"To preserve local memories, we decided to keep the old houses and treat them with the utmost care and respect," said Domain Architects. "At the same time, we wanted to create an unprecedented experience with the juxtaposition of tradition and contemporariness."
This project has been shortlisted in the public project (sports, hospitality and entertainment) category of Dezeen Awards China 2025.
