Wuyang Cultural Station
WAU Design has designed the Wuyang Cultural Station, a cultural building in Zhanjiang, China.
In Wuyang, a port city in Zhanjiang, lies a historic town with a 1,000-year legacy – the Wuyang Cultural Station reflects the region's identity, centred on an artefact exhibition hall preserving its history and culture.
The cultural station is located in the courtyard of the administrative building, adjacent to an eastern road.
Built of brick and concrete, it houses a historical exhibition hall, temporary exhibits, meeting rooms and a library.
"Like many rural Chinese areas, Wuyang struggles with urbanisation challenges, including population outflow and declining vitality," said WAU Design.
"Addressing these issues requires fostering residents' affection for their culture and a strong sense of identity, key to rural regeneration."
This low-tech architectural approach retains the texture of traditional dwellings while emphasising the communal nature of modern rural life.
This project has been shortlisted in the public project (arts, culture and community) category of Dezeen Awards China 2025.
