Hangzhou Liangzhu West Coast Kindergarten
Clou Architects has designed the Hangzhou Liangzhu West Coast Kindergarten, a kindergarten set on a man-made hill for children in Hangzhou, China.
West Coast Kindergarten is located in the Liangzhu area to the northwest of Hangzhou City, where its plot has a narrow rectangular shape directly facing the main street and adjacent to the West Coast retail street.
The project has a building area of 4,900 square metres, featuring terraced play areas and a colourful, block-like facade that sparks curiosity and creativity.
Clou's response was a stacked-block design that condenses the building footprint while freeing up playgrounds and terraces for outdoor learning.
Each classroom functions as an independent unit with its own outdoor extension, strengthening the connection between indoor and outdoor environments.
This approach allows the architecture to serve as a backdrop for children's creativity while maintaining a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The result is a dynamic, engaging and site-responsive environment that supports both educational and social interaction.
This project has been shortlisted in the education project category of Dezeen Awards China 2025.
