Architectural Lighting Installations
Other Matter has designed the architectural lighting installations at Aēsop Hainan for Aēsop.
Aēsop's Hainan store design is anchored by bespoke architectural lighting commissions from Other Matter, designed with Aēsop's in-house architects.
Featuring regenerative surfaces across entry installations, the lighting installation comprises over 2,000 suspended panels hand-coated in an algae-based material that casts shifting, underwater-like shadows.
Sealed with a biodegradable finish, the panels resist tropical humidity and allow for future disassembly and reuse. At each entrance, a patent-pending film is backlit to enhance its luminosity.
Hand-cast in Melbourne with locally milled pigments, all components were flat-packed or rolled, supporting circular use across multiple lifecycles.
This project has been shortlisted in the installation design category of Dezeen Awards China 2025.
