Winner: Bespoke and collectible design of the year 2025. Other Matter has designed Aēsop Hainan for Aēsop, a bespoke interior commission featuring regenerative architectural surfaces.

Aēsop's Hainan store features prominent interior elements commissioned from Other Matter, using regenerative surfaces made from a patent-pending algae-based material.

Over 2,000 hand-coated aluminium panels form suspended twin ceiling oculi that cast gently shifting shadows, evoking the refraction of light underwater, alongside a four-metre column and translucent entrance facade.

Cast by hand in Melbourne using low-energy methods, components were flat-packed or rolled for installation in China. The fossil-free, non-toxic material is reusable and recyclable, demonstrating how circular systems can achieve spatial richness and atmospheric depth.

The result proposes a new material language for sustainable luxury in high-end retail settings.
