Yu2e has created a return to community-enriching housing with the transformation of two properties in west Los Angeles.

The project is a six-dwellings housing project on two properties located near a busy transit hub.

It provides a critique and an alternative to the dominant single-family dwellings and suburban neighbourhoods that provide the vast majority of housing in the United States. It focuses on a transition into a mildly denser and community-enriching middle housing type, by encouraging the return of bungalow courts and multi-plexes.

The main building was taken down to foundation and then rebuilt with stacked dwelling units. The accessory building was completely rebuilt and sited to the northwest corner to redefine a large south oriented open space in the rear.

The general guiding principal for both properties was to reinforce the desirable qualities of suburban living while adding dwellings and prioritizing open space in support of interior spaces.

This project has been longlisted in the housing project category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
