Baihua Bookstore
Tsing-Tien Making has reimagined the interiors of the Baihua Bookstore, inspired by Kunqu Opera's near-lost mobile stage 'Tangmingdan' in Suzhou, China.
Tsing-Tien Making undertook the spatial renovation of Baihua Bookstore, a Kunqu-focused bookstore established in 1993 in Suzhou. Within a compact 65-square-metre site, the design reimagines the space as a fluid, layered cultural stage.
Drawing inspiration from the Tangmingdan – a now-rare portable stage once used by traditional Jiangnan opera troupes – the project integrates its modular components as a tribute to this vernacular performative structure. A central installation evokes a sense of theatrical ritual, anchoring the spatial narrative.
Through contemporary material strategies and mobile configurations, this project constructs a responsive framework that supports the transmission and reinterpretation of regional operatic heritage.
This project has been shortlisted in the small interior category of Dezeen Awards China 2025.
