Puzzle Piece
Foolfold Design has designed Puzzle Piece, a bag folded from a piece of fabric.
The Puzzle Piece series is designed to reinterpret the traditional 'Zisundai' (descendant's bag) and expand its use to a broader range of scenarios.
The primary material is Chinese 'Liangbu' ('shiny cloth'), complemented by aluminium handles treated with an anodising process and handcrafted by Wenwen Zhou and the Dong ethnic artisans of Yishanren in Qiandongnan, Guizhou, China.
The key innovation lies in the bags' unique structure: they are crafted from a single piece of cloth with a cross-shaped cut at the centre, which is then stitched to form a three-dimensional body and two distinctive horn shapes on top.
This zero-waste technique seamlessly converts a flat textile into a functional volumetric shape.
Moreover, based on the original structure, the designer's research found that adjusting the length-to-width ratio of the fabric allows for the creation of different bag styles, thereby adapting to the storage needs of variously shaped items.
This project has been shortlisted in the bespoke and collectible design category of Dezeen Awards China 2025.
