Sonic Urbanism Masterclass at Theatrum Mundi

The Sonic Urbanism Masterclass course at Theatrum Mundi explores how urban planning can incorporate acoustic considerations to alter the sounds of city life.

School: Theatrum Mundi
Course: Sonic Urbanism Masterclass
Location: London, UK
Course dates: 4 to 5 February 2023
Application deadline: 3 February 2023

Attention is turning more and more to the way cities sound – from experimental music and acoustic engineering to urban anthropology.

But can urbanism really be done sonically? What can the crafts of music and sonic art teach us about how acoustics structure social life?

This masterclass will be a series of two workshops taking place over two days, led by Theatrum Mundi fellow Sven Anderson along with artist and DJ Chooc Ly Tan.

It will focus on articulating how the research and design processes that shape cities can incorporate techniques, concepts and values from sonic practices. No previous experience working with sound is necessary.

As part of the course, you will receive three publications, including Sonic Urbanism: Resonances in a New Field, Sonic Urbanism: The Political Voice, and Sonic Urbanism: Listening to Non-Human Life.

Applications to this course have now closed.
