For this year's London Design Biennale, Malta's pavilion features a central large-scale sphere reminiscent of an urn, made from reconstituted limestone.
Titled URNA, the pavilion responds the biennale's theme Surface Reflections by exploring lifecycles, heritage, sustainability and transformation.
The installation, commissioned by Arts Council Malta, is curated by architect Andrew Borg Wirth, who is working with architects and designers Anthony Bonnici, Thomas Mifsud and Tanil Raif, art director Matthew Attard Navarro, art photographer Anne Immelé and filmmaker Stephanie Sant.
A recently developed reconstituted limestone product, Recobell, was selected as the core material for the project to honour the importance of stone throughout Malta's history.
URNA takes place from 5 to 29 June 2025 at London Design Biennale 2025, Somerset House, Strand, London WC2R 1LA, UK.
