Xmas Declarations by Ctrl.Alt.Shift

Manchester designers Dorothy have designed a set of Christmas baubles shaped like hand grenades for social initiative Ctrl.Alt.Shift and British design brand Suck UK.

Called Xmas Declarations, the project aims to draw attention to suffering in the developing world.

CTRL.ALT.SHIFT LAUNCHES ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS DECORATION

'A Dead Thoughtful Product'

Chestnuts are roasting and the halls are decked, oh ‘tis the season to be jolly… Unless, perhaps, you are one of the millions who exist silently in an often forgotten reality.

In a bid to encourage people to think beyond tinsel and Christmas cake, youth initiative Ctrl.Alt.Shift has developed a unique seasonal tree decoration: delicate glass baubles which are actually replica hand grenades.

Designed by Dorothy for Ctrl.Alt.Shift in association with Suck UK, the'Xmas Declarations' will add sparkle to any branch, whilst offering a reminder that the time of year does not bring cheer to all.

Ctrl.Alt.Shift is an experimental initiative politicising a new generation of activists for social justice and global change. Using creativity, photography, film, stories, illustrations and music, it aims to give a voice to the silent majority.

    my suspicion is that it is mainly made to draw attention to personal hipness..
    and it would have worked…10 years ago.
    please guns and amo are such big cliche’s nowadays that they only claim a sort of youth/urban culture more that the actaul ware where they are used..
    so please Ctr/Alt/Dell

    THIS IS THE MOST TASTELESS THING I HAVE EVER, EVER COME ACROSS ! “MAKING PEOPLE THINK” JUST SOUNDS LIKE AN EXCUSE FOR ME. HOW DARE YOU LOOKING AT GRANADES DURING XMAS. WHATS WRONG WITH THOSE PEOPLE……..

    Happy chrismas this year:
    I will drink sake in sea mines by Los Angeles designer Alexander Purcell , eat the last red tuna fish sashimi , put hand grenades in chrismas tree by Manchester designers Dorothy or in my old gun light by french design superstar Philippe Starck …and then drive with my CO2 Hummer with my chrismas gifts in a dangerous district of Paris: Champs Elysées …

    If you pick up any WW2 or Vietnam War book, you’ll be able to see a lot of pictures of Christmas where soldiers have their trees with (real) grenades.

    I don’t even consider this a (re)design.

    These designers obviously know the work of Jaime Hayón for Baccarat, an extremely cool vase collection presented aprox one year ago.

    thinking outside the (gift) box is important. Many dont observe christmas and some cant even afford to in these hard times.

  • Guido

    Its more of an advertising idea, something War Child would hand out for free. As an advertising idea I like it.

    EXCELLENT

    I like the cycnicism.
    @Andi
    calm down. Christmas became a commercially whored event years ago. I’m not christian, and my extended family is overseas so it means nothing to me apart from my younger sisters getting excited about the tree.

    I like the cynicism.

    @kaptnk :
    1/Chrismas is not only christian, it is a family meeting and bizz you are right 2/ Are you ok to introduce more violence in children toys and in family friendly symbol chrismas tree?
    3/ Are you an ancient cynicism or a moderm one?

    I saw that also in a russian chrismas tree…USA VS RUSSIA .. Cold war again?

    @ ANdi
    Err isn’t the cross that Jesus was nailed to kept as a symbol to ‘make us think’?
    If anything some hand grenades make more sense than any of the stupid little shiny things or reindeer. It’s more relevant to stop and think about the millions of babies currently being born in mangers because their homes have been blown up. I’m not even Christian and I still believe in keeping it to the point.

    The idea is interesting but it would only be good if the profits went to helping people in those places that need it… otherwise this is just a gimmick for trendy folk with money to burn.
