Tom Dixon to unveil accessories with live "factory" at Maison & Objet

Maison&Objet 2014: British designer Tom Dixon will launch a home accessories collection including mouth-blown barware and scent diffusers at Paris design show Maison & Objet, which has named him Designer of the Year.

Tom Dixon's presence at the show will take the form of The Factory, an installation comprising live on-site production, a packaging unit and a pop-up shop.

Four limited-edition scented accessories will be made on site with materials sourced in London, and will be available for sale exclusively at the show.

"The idea is not only to invade Paris with our London scent; The Factory also demonstrates the speed at which we can now create new ideas and sell in the modern age," said Dixon.

The Tank collection

The collection features a "distinctly London" scent and includes the Mud Diffuser, which is made from red wood-fired brick that is soaked in the perfume and shaped like a traditional building block. It also comes in a miniature version.

The Mud Obelisk Diffuser is made from the same material and sits on a manganese-glazed base, while the Mud Candle is housed in a cast-aluminium container with an enamelled steel lid.

Tank Decanter

All four products are sold with a 15ml London scent refill – described as "the smell of red brick and London parks with crocuses and nettles, and the salty smell of the Thames at Dagenham" – and presented in a limited-edition burgundy box, laser-marked on-site.

"We scoured the globe for a new and efficient way of diffusing fragrances – volcanic rock from Indonesia, charcoal from Japan, hi-tech ceramic from Germany, but strangely the most effective material was in our back yard – the humble London brick," Dixon told Dezeen.

Tank Jug

Along with the diffusers, Dixon will also present the Tank barware collection that includes a highball glass, a lowball glass, a jug and a decanter.

These pieces are made from mouth-blown coloured or clear glass with hand-painted gold detailing.

Tom Dixon will be in Hall 8 at Maison & Objet, taking place at Paris' Nord Villepinte exhibition centre from 5 to 9 September.
