"I think of Dezeen as my childhood friend" – birthday wishes from Oki Sato and other leading designers

Dezeen is 10 years old today! To kick off a year of celebrations marking the first Dezeen Decade, we asked some of our favourite architects and designers to tell us what Dezeen has meant to them.

"An amazing success" – Thomas Heatherwick, Heatherwick Studio

When Marcus Fairs was leaving Icon magazine and mentioned his idea for a design website, I tried to dissuade him, saying that I thought it was a rubbish idea and that he would be better off sticking to print. Well... errr... wow. What an amazing success and an incredible resource for all of us trying to make special work. Congratulations to Dezeen on 10 years!

"My childhood friend" – Oki Sato, Nendo

Although it will be 15 years since we started Nendo next spring, for the first five years we did not have proper projects to work on, so I feel that my actual career has been 10 years. Therefore I think of Dezeen as my childhood friend.

The approach may be different, but Nendo and Dezeen are similar in that we have both been constantly thinking about the roles and possibilities of design in the current digital age of speed, diversity and complexity. For the next 10 years, I hope that we can keep going as we have in the past.

"A revolution in architecture media" – Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries, MVRDV

Congratulations! To us, there is a time before Dezeen and after Dezeen. This incredible endless online stream of the latest designs, the global reach, the fast pace, the raw comments. It was a revolution in architecture media that took place 10 years ago.

Within a changing media landscape, we moved within a decade from lengthy highly sophisticated architecture criticism by Herbert Muschamp to the dynamic newsfeed of Dezeen, commented on by the general public, less sophistication, more images, more democracy.

Dezeen's sunny side is the upbeat publication that sends our works to the furthest corners of the globe, its dark side, the anonymous comments, but we became global and developed an elephant's skin. Happy birthday, keep up the good work!

"A very important impact on my life" – Marc Benda, Friedman Benda Gallery, New York

I like Dezeen for a lot of reasons. One of the more notable things is I saw the Cabbage Chair by Nendo in your newsletter in 2008 and I immediately got in touch with the studio.

That's basically how Nendo and I started collaborating. It has lead so far to maybe six or seven major projects. Several of them are with major museums including an exhibition at MAD in New York, plus three shows at our gallery and the Manga Chairs project in Milan. So Dezeen has had a very important impact on my life.

"The exchange of ideas and information about architecture has been massively accelerated" – Bjarke Ingels, BIG

BIG is actually, I think, just one year older than Dezeen. When we started our company we obviously didn't have much built work and of course we didn't have much access to established publications, so we just decided to put every single project we did online, on our own website, but it quickly found feet to flow around in the bloggersphere.

In that sense, the exchange of ideas and information about architecture – obviously in any field but definitely in architecture – has been massively accelerated by the advent of new media like Dezeen.

"Helped me establish myself" – Philippe Malouin

Dezeen played an important part in helping me be able to make a living from design. It might seem small, but when you're a designer, this is all you dream of.

Dezeen published my work at the very beginning, and helped me establish myself and get better known throughout the world. I don't think I would have enjoyed the same amount of success without you guys.

"A wealth of inspiration for the next generation" – Marcel Wanders

More than being the world's most popular and influential architecture and design magazine, Dezeen is a platform for thought.

What is most important to me is how much you recognise and respect the investment artists and designers place into their craft. Whether you are an artist, a collector or a student, you can see the effort Dezeen makes to ensure that each exhibit, product or artist featured is given equal respect and representation.

In the end, Dezeen is about connectivity. The magazine provides insight into the highest level of creativity. Dezeen is a wealth of inspiration for the next generation, and you have made our studio a significant part of that.

"A factor in the proliferation of Parametricism" – Patrik Schumacher, Zaha Hadid Architects

Wow, is it really already a whole decade that Dezeen has been with us? The decade of Parametricism!

It is also the decade where  – for the first time thanks to Dezeen and other online platforms  – all architectural events have become truly global. Eight years ago we launched Parametricism via manifesto and group presentation at the 2008 Venice Biennale.

A year earlier, I had been struck how persistent and cumulative our design research had been and how much it had become part of a growing global movement. I thought this persistent convergence of efforts meant something profound and deserved to be given a name, as a hook for its further deepening and proliferation. So I used the Biennale to launch the term, the analysis and my idea of its further progress. Dezeen has certainly been a factor in its proliferation.

"We all get richer and more inspired" – Fabio Novembre

I remember when Marcus founded Dezeen. We all had computers in our studios but we were still fascinated by the printed paper of magazines. One year before the first iPhone, he understood we would turn digital, and so it was.

Serendipitously, my very first digital project for Stuart Weitzman was one of the first posts on Dezeen.

Now every morning I turn on my laptop, I open Dezeen and I feel connected to my world. We share the same platform and we all get richer and more inspired. Life is a team game, and I'm grateful to Dezeen for making it possible.

"Gets everyone to be part of the conversation" – Tom Kundig, Olson Kundig Architects

Dezeen has been amazing for us. Our reach has so far exceeded what we ever expected from our little funky town in Seattle, Washington, in our little moist corner of the US. What is so unbelievable about Dezeen is that it gets everyone to be part of the conversation. It's a global conversation – despite what some politicians may want – and it's going to continue.

"A global influence" – Mark Dytham, Klein Dytham Architecture

Dezeen makes a huge, huge difference to me. I think, first of all, it proves that anybody with a strong idea can make a huge difference in the world, and that comes down to Marcus as the chief editor.

From a very small thing, Dezeen has become a global influence and I think that is the key thing for architects – that they can make a difference. A very small idea can develop into a very strong idea. What Dezeen has done is incredible, and proves that architects and designers can make a huge difference in the world with their interventions and their ideas.

"The biggest and best" – Ben van Berkel, UNStudio

You've become the biggest and best, and we need you! Whenever we have a new project or new items to discuss you're always there, you're always the first to share. We get so much response, because you connect to a wider public of not only students but architects and clients who follow who you are and that is incredibly important for us. We have no other platform otherwise.

"AL_A's online magazine of choice" – Amanda Levete, AL_A

Dezeen is AL_A's online magazine of choice. It's dynamic and current, and as it has matured, the opinion pieces by some of the most respected people in the field are becoming more significant and influential. And now when it campaigns on an issue, like Brexit, it has a weight that will make sure its voice is heard.

"Transformed the way architecture is communicated" – Reiulf Ramstad

Dezeen is really doing a really important job – promoting innovative architecture is very important. I'm a big supporter because I think it's so essential that you have places where you can discuss and debate architecture in a global sense, and Dezeen has transformed the way architecture is communicated. We were all tired of the old magazines, the world is moving really fast, and every day discussions about architecture – for me it's central.

"Helped to popularise design" – Benjamin Hubert, Layer

Dezeen is a great vehicle for discussing our practice and point of view on design with the world. The platform has helped to popularise design and open the industry up to a wider audience, which can only be a good thing. Design is a powerful tool for change – but needs a global understanding to achieve that, and Dezeen is helping to facilitate that understanding.

"First and leading truly global source of design news" – Paul Priestman, PriestmanGoode

Over the last 10 years, Dezeen has established itself as the first and leading truly global source of design news. It's an honest voice in an industry that can often sound self-important and indulgent, and allows readers to make up their own minds.

Through its opinion column, the site also provides a platform for designers and architects to share their views and encourage discourse on a wide range of topics, from legacy and succession to design education or the housing crisis – something that is hugely valuable. I look forward to following Dezeen as it grows its influence beyond the design world, through initiatives such as the Dezeen Brexit Manifesto.

"Best opportunity I've ever had" – David Kohn

When we were at the 2013 Inside awards and we won, Marcus interviewed me. I think it was the best opportunity I've ever had to present a project, because it was then turned into a film and put online. That bit of content has stood the test of time and is still referred to. Thank you!

"A special place and a pioneer of its kind" – Arik Levy

Dezeen is a special place and a pioneer of its kind. Its great team is doing amazing work, opening up the gates and thoughts to the wide world just under our fingertips. I'm grateful to Dezeen for all the publications, all the information, for following up on me and my doing, for bringing the good questions up and for being generous.

"One of the few online magazines we appreciate" – Katharina Mischer and Thomas Traxler, Mischer'Traxler

Dezeen is one of the few online magazines we highly appreciate. The selection is always interesting and gives a good overview of what is going on at the moment.

"Our channel to the global design community" – Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu, Neri&Hu

Dezeen is our channel to the global design community. It is a combination of media, retail, community, education and entertainment all in one platform.

"Seduces me every time" – Vincent Van Duysen

Dezeen offers an excellent selection of "almost to the minute" of all things related to architecture, interior and design; accessible to both professionals and the public. Although I am a lover of print and books, Dezeen seduces me every time by its dynamic completeness and reach. Bravo for 10 years of inspiring information! On to the next decade!

"At the forefront of breaking news" – Lee Broom

Dezeen has always been at the forefront of breaking news stories in the design world and refreshingly, it also offers an opinion on what’s really important and culturally relevant. We have grown up as a brand with Dezeen, it has supported us since we first launched in 2007 and has continued to do so to this day.

For me and our studio Dezeen isn't just one of the leading design portals but they’re also our neighbours and our friends. I very much look forward to seeing what the next 10 years brings.

"Readers from all over the world are aware of our work" – Vo Trong Nghia

Dezeen is one of the most important media not only for us at Vo Trong Nghia Architects, but also for the rest of the upcoming architects in Vietnam.

Through Dezeen, we can share the challenges we are facing in a developing country such as Vietnam, as well as how we tackle these issues through our projects. Readers from all over the world are aware of our work. The exposure is extremely valuable to us as we appreciate the feedback given by them. This is very important for us, not only to grow as architects, but also to develop the architecture in the developing countries.

Coincidently, this year is also the 10th anniversary of Vo Trong Nghia Architects. I'm sure the journey to where Dezeen is today has been full of challenges and obstacles. We appreciate and respect your journey to becoming one of the most important platforms for all architects and designers to share what we are passionate about, design.

"Only artistic high-quality stuff" – Mikkel Frost, CEBRA

The internet obviously is great for inspiration. The problem is that one needs to trawl through so much junk to find the goodies! What I've always liked about Dezeen is that you do this for me. Once I enter the site I only find artistic high-quality stuff that I would have picked out myself.

"An indispensable tool" – Giulio Cappellini

I have always followed Dezeen from the outset – a magazine beautiful to look at and to read. Dezeen has always been a keen observer of contemporary design trends and, often, an anticipator.

A careful journal, contemporary and cosmopolitan. An indispensable tool not only for the knowledge and spread of design but above all to know the evolution of today's consumer. Happy Birthday Dezeen!

"The most influential design platform of our time" - Loic Le Gaillard, Carpenters Workshop Gallery

Dezeen is without question the most influential design platform of our time. Marcus has given us instant and direct access to the highlights of design and architecture from across the globe.
