Installations and exhibitions not to miss during Miami art week

The art and design worlds descend on Miami this week for the Art Basel fair and a host of concurrent events, including Design Miami. Here's our pick of the installations and exhibitions taking place.


New Spring by Studio Swine and COS

New Spring – COS x Studio Swine

Fashion brand COS and designers Studio Swine have teamed up again to bring their collaborative project shown in Milan earlier this year to Miami.

The New Spring installation, in which bubbles falling from a sculptural tree burst into mist, has been scaled up and will sit against an all-white backdrop.

Franchise Freedom by Studio Drift

Franchise Freedom – Studio Drift, BMW and Pace Gallery

A swarm of 300 LED-mounted drones will perform a choreographed display above the beach and ocean, created by Amsterdam-based artists Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta of Studio Drift using algorithms that mimic the movements of starling flocks.

The world premiere of the project will take place Wednesday 6 December 2017 at 9pm during a private event, but will be visible from far away.

Nuage – Bouroullec brothers

Design duo Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are erecting a set of pergolas over a pedestrianised street in the Design District, to provide shade and seating for visitors.

Made from steel and coloured glass, the structures will comprise stacks of cylinders that form a canopy held up by slender poles.

Insubordinate Creatures

Insubordinate Creatures – Norwegian Crafts x Galleri Format Oslo

For the first showcase of Norwegian artists Ellen Grieg and Elisabeth von Krogh in the Americas, the duo have created a series of craft objects that attempt "to animate and anthropomorphise minimalist forms through the byproducts of stereotypically feminine activity".

The sculptural and ceramic pieces will be displayed in an architectural intervention by Sean Griffiths, formerly of FAT, as part of Design Miami's Design Curio exhibition platform.

Core by Philippe Malouin

Core – Philippe Malouin

For another Design Curio, designer Philippe Malouin is presenting Core, a huge concrete sculpture measuring measures 11.5 feet (3.5 metres) high that doubles as a bench.

The architectural piece, Malouin's first at this scale, is being displayed by gallery Salon 94 Design.

Carlos Cruz Diez

Chroma – Carlos Cruz-Diez x SCAD

A series of immersive installations by artist Carlos Cruz-Diez will explore the 94-year-old's colour theories, including an outdoor intervention and an altered shipping container with colourful chambers.

Presented by the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Museum of Art, the exhibition will also feature a series of recent studies, and three new documentaries that examine Cruz-Diez's life and career.

Rapid Liquid Printing

Rapid Liquid Printing – MIT's Self-Assembly Lab, Christophe Guberan and Patrick Parrish Gallery

The Self-Assembly Lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology will demonstrate its newly developed printing process, which allows involves robotically extruding material from a computer-controlled nozzle into gel.

Visitors will be able to watch as the process – which works in a fraction of the time compared to 3D printing – produces tote bags and art objects.
