ETH Zurich researchers develop new method of robotic timber construction

This captioned movie shows a new digital construction technique that could allow robots to construct the buildings of the future.

Called Spatial Timber Assemblies, the project was developed as a collaboration between research labs Gramazio Kohler Research, ETH Zurich and ERNE AG Holzbau. It allows robots to quickly and easily assemble complex timber modules, which could be used to form large structures.

The multi-robotic fabrication process involves a series of processes. Firstly, a CNC-controlled saw and drill are used to prepare each component. These are then arranged and fixed together, with the use of optic sensors.
