Dezeen promotion: architects and designers are invited to register to MADE Labs' architecture and design training programme, which takes place in Sicily throughout July and August.

Now in its third year, MADE Labs is the educational initiative of the Mediterranean Arts & Design (MADE) Program, which aims to offer high quality and affordable training programmes to professionals and students across the globe.

The programme takes inspiration from Victor Papanek's idea that design should address real human needs

The event's schedule of workshops and lectures is based on the theme of "Welcome – borderless visions on design, architecture and visual arts".

"In 1971 Victor Papanek published his seminal text Design for the Real World, which thoughtfully examines the necessity of addressing 'real human needs' as opposed to the 'invented needs' created by the market," said the MADE Lab curators.

"Papanek clearly exemplified how design can be incorporated into many areas of life and how it can be a tool to fight social injustice," they continued.

Participants will receive three academic ECTS credits after completing one of the workshops

According to the organisers, Papanek's conception of design as socially inclusive is just as relevant now as it was when he wrote the text.

"As normalisation and cultural standardisation persist in their attack on the rich diversity of vitality, for the 2019 edition of MADE Labs, the city of Syracuse will welcome a group of designers, architects and artists who, each in their own way, celebrate inclusivity as an essential element of design," they added.

The MADE Labs symposium will also be open to the city on the evenings of 27 and 29 July with events featuring keynote speakers such as curator and designer Jan Boelen, architectural historians and Istanbul Design Biennial curators Beatriz Colomina and Mark Wigley, Italian philosopher and educator Emanuele Coccia, and British artist and educator Fiona Raby.

Three ECTS credits will be issued by the MADE Program to the participants once one of the workshops are completed, which amounts to 35 hours of classes. These credits can then be transferred at the option of each student's university.
