A dining room with the Picnic Blanket I rug by Raymond Loewe for Tai Ping Carpets

Picnic Blanket I rug by Raymond Loewy for Edward Fields

Dezeen Showroom: Tai Ping-owned brand Edward Fields has relaunched the 1952 Picnic Blanket I rug by renowned American industrial designer Raymond Loewy.

Picnic Blanket I forms part of the brand's ready-made Home collection of rugs, which is available in pre-defined sizes and colours.

The design is distinguished by a patchwork of plain and striped panels, interspersed with decorative, star-like motifs. Each panel is finished in earthy shades ranging from deep brown to off-white.

It was designed by Loewy as part of a wider collection in the 1950s, which "revolutionised the role of the carpet in home decor" according to Edward Fields.

Each Picnic Blanket I rug is made from New Zealand wool using a loop pile weave, affording it a textured and durable finish. It is available to purchase in a standard size of 2.4 by three metres.

Tai Ping Carpets had relaunched the archival rug as part of the Edward Fields Home Collection, which is made by its subsidiary Edward Fields Carpet Makers.

The American brand was founded in 1935 and bought by Tai Ping Carpets in 2005.

There are a total of nine pieces in the new collection, four of which are being featured over the next week on Dezeen Showroom. Each piece is made in predefined sizes and colours, negating the costs and manufacturing times associated with bespoke rugs.
