Dezeen Showroom: washable rug brand Lorena Canals has released Enkang, a subtly patterned design inspired by an East African style of fencing.

Part of the Woolable by Lorena Canals range, the Enkang rug is a nod to the thorny acacia fencing used by the Maasai people, of present-day Kenya and Tanzania.

The Enkang rug combines different lengths of pile to create a subtle pattern

The wool rug features contrasting short and medium pile heights, which the brand describes as mimicking the fence's appearance.

Lorena Canals appreciated the simplicity and flexibility of this design, which can be easily moved to suit the Maasai people's nomadic lifestyle, and named the rug after the Swahili word for this kind of fence.

Like all of the Spanish brand's rugs, the Enkang is machine washable. The handcrafted corner braids that are a detail of the Enkang design can be easily removed to prevent them being damaged during washing.

The Enkang rug is available in three sizes, including a runner style, and in two colours: ivory and brown.
