Bauhaus chairs by Erich Dieckmann for TYP

Dezeen Showroom: Austrian brand TYP has reissued a trio of chairs by seminal Bauhaus furniture designer Erich Dieckmann and adapted them for modern use.

The Dieckmann by TYP collection is centred on D1, a wooden chair with a cubic frame and curved backrest designed to fit into a variety of different interiors.

It also includes two variations on this design – a version with armrests called D1+ and one with slanted hind legs and a simplified backrest called D2.

Originally created by Dieckmann around 1930, the seating designs were early examples of Typenmöbel, meaning furniture optimised for standardised mass production.

All their components were carefully measured and fabricated to fit the human body, in a bid to guarantee comfort despite their wooden frames.

TYP has brought the Bauhaus chairs up to date by reengineering their joints and adapting their sizes for modern users, all while preserving their original proportions.

"Each piece is simple yet functional, stringently geometric yet adaptable to the human posture," said TYP. "What applies to all is easy to produce and fairly priced products that don’t compromise quality."

The chairs can be finished in three different kinds of wood and six different colours

The chairs are available in hardwearing Robinia wood for use outdoors and in oak or ash wood for interior purposes.

The ash can also be dyed in six different colours including black, white, baby blue and olive green. The wooden seats can be left plain, swapped out for wickerwork or upholstered in a range of textiles and leathers.
