Passage rug collection by Brooke Aitken Design for Tsar Carpets

Dezeen Showroom: created by Tsar Carpets in collaboration with architecture and interior design practice, Brooke Aitken Design, the Passage rug collection features artistic patterns designed to reference the changing seasons.

The Passage collection features six different patterns – Day, Night, Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn – all based on imagery that designer Brooke Aitken experienced in a dream about the passing of time.

The Passage Rug collection's Night rug comes in a rich midnight blue

Aitken worked with her team to turn her sketches into Photoshop designs, and then with the Tsar Carpets team to translate that vision using the materiality and technical possibilities of rug manufacturing.

"Each season and each part of the day offers everyone a special time instance of consideration, and each rug in the Passage Collection embodies a mood-related to these distinct moments in time," said Aitken.

The Summer rug has a reflective quality created by adding Tencel fibres

The Passage rug collection includes abstract patterns and rich colours such as midnight blue and russet dawn red that are meant to capture the qualities of light at different times of the day. Each design comes in two colour options.

The textures are also evocative, with the Summer rug mixing New Zealand wool gradients and highlights of Tencel to give a shimmering look redolent of summertime light, while the Winter design contrasts undyed wool and low Tencel lines for a "sense of warmth and comfort".
