Dezeen Showroom: furniture maker Morgan worked with designer Magnus Long on a chair made from wood and cane that intends to showcase British craftsmanship.

Launched at Clerkenwell Design Week 2024, the Barricane dining chair combines a solid wood frame with a cane backrest, which loosens the formality of the chair's straight lines and gives it a contemporary appeal.

It's also a comfortable, flexible addition to the chair, which intends to provide ergonomic support to the sitter.

Long created the Barricane chair – named after Barricane Beach in Devon – to take advantage of the technical expertise offered by Morgan's craftspeople.

"There are few companies working to this level of wood production in the UK, capable of producing such complex curves, and I wanted to push this technical excellence whilst embracing the craft and tradition of caning," said Long.

Barricane is available in an armchair or side chair model and can be manufactured in a range of timbers and finishes.

Despite being delicate in appearance, it is designed to be durable enough for use in contract interiors.
