Watch On's spray-on running shoe robot in action
Swiss brand On has showcased its trainer-spraying robot on the London leg of its world tour.
The video shows On's robot in action producing the brands LightSpray shoes, which have an upper made using its sprayable technology.
Dezeen filmed the robot in action in London
To create each trainer, the robotic arm sprays almost a mile of filament directly onto the midsole. Within three minutes, the trainer is fully formed.
The robot was demonstrating the process used to make the LightSpray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper shoe, which is replicated by 32 robots within On's South Korean production facility.
Swiss brand On first unveiled the LightSpray technology in 2024. At the time, On director of innovation, technology and research Nils Altrogge said there was no term for the process by which the shoe is made.
"The upper is not knitted, weaved or other typical technologies that are used in the textile industry, it is sprayed," he told Dezeen.
"So the resulting textile is something completely new, there's not even a word for that."
