Dezeen Showroom: natural fibres and handwoven textures provide visual interest without the need for bright colour in this rug collection by Australian brand Armadillo.
Comprising nine rug styles, the Meridian collection is handmade in India by skilled artisans and has a restrained character with understated variations in colour and texture achieved through material choices and construction.
"Natural fibres carry a depth that can't be replicated," said Armadillo co-founder Jodie Fried. "Their strength and subtle irregularity are what give each rug its character."
The collection ranges from minimal flat-weave designs to plush cut pile and robust looped styles, featuring premium materials such as New Zealand wool and Indian jute.
One of the standouts is Selva, which Armadillo considers an "elevated interpretation" of the traditional kilim rug with patchwork-like variegation created through the use of three distinct hanks of Afghan wool yarn.
Available in the earthy hues of Desert, Silt, Walnut or undyed Oat, the rug is finished with a small cotton fringe matched in colour to the weft.
