This week RIBA revealed the best British buildings of 2026

This week on Dezeen, the Royal Institute of British Architects announced that 32 buildings had been awarded National Awards, with over half of them in London.

The 32 buildings, which form the long list for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize, included a dance theatre for Sadler's Wells by O'Donnell + Tuomey, a rammed-earth house by Tuckey Design Studio and two additions to York Minster by Tonkin Liu.

Following the trend in recent years, over half of the winning buildings – 17 out of 32 – were in London.

Yinka Ilori unveiled a collection for Dunelm

In design news, British-Nigerian designer Yinka Ilori created a 40-piece collection for high-street furniture retailer Dunelm with a "1960s or '70s nostalgia feel".

Ilori picked his favourite four pieces from the collection – a swivel chair, calabash-shaped lamp, biscuit table and sofa – in a video filmed by Dezeen.

A building in New York was in danger of collapse

In the US, an alarm was raised in New York when columns were found "buckling" and "sagging" in a skyscraper conversion, sparking fears of collapse. After inspection, the city's fire department found that the entire building was not at risk of failure.

"We want to confirm that the affected area is a small section of one of the two buildings on this site," said a spokesperson for the building's developer Metro Loft Development LLC.

A farmhouse in the Highlands was one of this week's most popular projects

Popular projects this week included a blackened-larch extension to a farmhouse in the Highlands, a kindergarten by Kéré Architecture and a hempcrete chicken coop in Portugal.
