Design gallery Béton Brut has teamed up with manufacturer Isokon to reinterpret Marcel Breuer's plywood furniture for the company, showcasing it "in a new way" with the Masur Edition at London Design Festival.
The collection is launching at London Design Festival (LDF) in time for the 90th anniversary of Breuer's original 1930s designs for Isokon, and will be on display in Béton Brut's east London showroom.
Breuer's original furniture designs for Isokon were made from plywood, but could also be finished with other woods such as sycamore, zebrano, mahogany and Australian walnut.
Called Masur Edition, the new collection aims to challenge the idea that the Breuer pieces were always made from plywood and intended to remain unadorned.
"Historical examples produced during his time as chief designer at Isokon featured a range of finishes, demonstrating plywood's capacity for material variation and expression," Béton Brut founder Sophie Pearce told Dezeen.
The Masur Edition comprises four Breuer designs – the Cut-Out Armchair, Cut-Out Chair, Isokon Nesting Tables and Isokon Dining Table, all of which were designed in 1936.
The pieces all have Isokon's signature clean, simple shapes, but have been updated with decoratively patterned masur birch. The wood, which is grown in northern Europe, is rare and features distinctive swirls and small knots caused by fungal or bacterial activity.
"Chosen for its elusive, graphic character, masur birch introduces a psychedelic quality to Breuer's precise modernist forms," Pearce said.
"Its intricate figuring creates a striking contrast with the clarity and restraint of the designs, giving a different feel to these familiar works – all while remaining faithful to Breuer's vision."
The Masur Edition will be a limited-edition launch, with prices starting at £1,300 and no set number of pieces.
"Masur veneer is scarce and difficult to source in high volume," Pearce explained. "The works will be sold exclusively through the gallery on a made-to-order basis, with a lead time of approximately 10 to 12 weeks."
Béton Brut has sold a number of early Isokon pieces over the years, Pearce said, which has created a connection between the gallery and Isokon's work. To her, working with Breuer's designs and reinterpreting them for today's world was both daunting and exciting.
"There's a responsibility that comes with working with such iconic pieces, but it's also exciting to showcase them in a new way whilst staying true to the ethos of Béton Brut gallery, which is to present limited bodies of exclusive works," Pearce said.
"Being able to contribute in some small way to the story of Isokon and Marcel Breuer has been a real privilege."
