Dezeen Showroom: economy of material and sculptural presence meet in this lounge chair, designed by Anne-mette Bartholin and Morten Ernst for furniture brand Cozmo.

The Gingko lounge chair is the product of a simple gesture, where a 2D shape is turned into a 3D object using as little material as possible.

Bartholin and Ernst originally designed it in the early 2000s for then Danish manufacturer Weber Furniture. Bartholin worked with Cozmo for the last two years to update it for the present era, with consideration to proportion, construction processes and the engineering of comfort.

Named for its resemblance to the fan-shaped leaf of the gingko tree, the chair consists of only two structural elements: the moulded plywood seat shell, available in either oak or walnut, and a slender three-legged tubular steel frame.

An easily removable upholstered cushion completes the lightweight, stackable chair, which Bartholin describes as having a poetic and embracing character.

"Together, the two elements create a construction that is both simple and expressive, in which every part has a clear purpose," said Bartholin.

"The generous proportions invite you to sit back and put your feet up, while the curved shell follows and carries the width of the body, creating a subtle sense of dynamic tension."
