Promotion: Spanish design brand Kriskadecor has clad the facade of Disneyland Paris's latest store in a striking aluminium chain system that reinterprets the visuals of "it's a small world" – one of the resort's most popular attractions.
Disney Glamour, Disney Village's latest shop within the "it's a small world" universe, was designed to have an "instantly recognisable and timeless" aesthetic.
The building's facade features a lightweight epoxy-coated aluminium chain facade developed by Kriskadecor, known as a KDO Fixed System.
The design aimed to reinterpret Disney artist Mary Blair's "it's a small world" graphic, whose whimsy and colourful style has defined Disney's musical attraction since its launch in the 1970s.
Measuring 14.66 metres wide and 5.8 metres high, the chains create a lightweight, visually striking volume, which gives the building a strong architectural presence.
Using Blair's signature palette of blue, gold and white, the design also mirrors her geometrical compositions and graphic architectural motifs.
"At Disney Glamour, Kriskadecor's aluminium chains recreate a pattern inspired by Blair's collage-like approach, evoking temples, minarets and international silhouettes reminiscent of the celebrated facade of "it's a small world", said the brand about its system.
"The composition employs five colours, carefully selected to honour Blair's artistic language: bright whites, deep blues and warm golds."
According to Kriskadecor, the facade interacts with changing light patterns throughout the day, giving the building an ever-changing appearance.
"Located in an area accessible year-round, the new store has quickly become a visual landmark within the retail and leisure district, reinforcing the character of its surroundings and enriching the visitor experience with an instantly recognisable and timeless aesthetic," said Kriskadecor.
Externally, the facade is a continuous, solid-looking surface that provides privacy. Internally, the chain ensures visibility, whilst promoting natural ventilation.
The system is also designed to reduce solar heat gain and improve the building's overall thermal comfort in hot weather conditions.
According to Kriskadecor, the use of aluminium ensures the chains are corrosion-resistant and fully recyclable, aligning with "contemporary sustainability principles in architecture and construction".
The system was also tested to withstand variable wind pressures, and its flexible design ensures installation and maintenance are straightforward.
Like the Disney store's facade, Kriskadecor's facade solutions are customisable in size, form and colour, allowing the reproduction of images, patterns and logotypes.
