The Sustainable Design MA welcomes designers wanting to direct their existing practice towards ambitious visions of a more sustainable, inclusive and equitable society.

Our established, multi-disciplinary course will enable you to raise your sustainability literacy, and design meaningful responses to the challenges of unsustainability that move you the most.

Our graduates challenge the design industry to redesign design. As a course, we ask – What's next for design thinking that addresses the climate emergency? What's next for design innovation that imagines more sustainable futures? What's next for design practice that questions what we design, how we design and why we design?

We explore innovative, practical, provocative and speculative ways to help realise sustainable visions. We think through making, testing, questioning and imagining. And we think critically, holistically and sensitively about the global perspectives and diverse agendas of sustainability.

Within our projects, we collaborate with specialist organisations, industry partners and other courses in our design school. Through the course, you’ll engage with research techniques and ethics, user-centred and participatory methods, experimental making, prototyping and user testing. You'll be encouraged to bring your personal interests to projects – to explore aspects of sustainability that resonate with you and to become a citizen designer.
