XJ Design Agency has designed The Vanished Garden in Datong Ancient City, China.

The Vanished Garden project is located in the Damiaojiao Historic District in the southeast town of Datong Ancient City, where there are a large number of traditional residential buildings preserved in the block and have a relatively complete historical style.

"We transformed the vacant and abandoned site into a public space full of historical memories," said XJ Design Agency. "A series of fragmentary old objects discovered during the renovation of the ancient city are displayed on the site from a new perspective."

The combination with new materials brings a unique spatial experience, realising the overlap of the past and present time and space, allowing people to participate in the interaction while stimulating thoughts of the past and future.

This project has been shortlisted in the heritage project category of Dezeen Awards China 2023.
