Tom Dixon launches Portable lamps to make homes more flexible

Designer Tom Dixon's eponymous homeware brand has created rechargeable battery-powered versions of three of its most popular lamps.

The Tom Dixon Portable range includes cordless table-lamp versions of the Melt, Bell and Stone designs.

Shortlisted for Dezeen Awards 2023 in the lighting design category, the products were designed to allow living spaces to be used more flexibly.

They combine battery power with low-energy LEDs, allowing them to offer nine hours of battery life with every full charge.

"No longer do we want to be tethered to a fixed desk or power outlet, so increasingly we want our light to move with us," said Dixon, who founded his London-based brand in 2002.

"Thankfully the magic of technology has come to the rescue with powerful batteries and low energy light sources combined to allow us to illuminate wherever we choose with complete adaptability," the British designer added.

All of the Portables come with three dimmable settings, to make them more multi-functional, and can be used indoors or outdoors.

The Melt Portables feature one of the brand's most identifiable designs, first unveiled in 2015 in collaboration with Swedish design studio Front.

With a distinctively fluid shape, the blown-glass table lamp comes in a gold, silver, copper or black metal finish.

Available in the same four finishes, the Bell Portables are made from pressed steel. First launched in 2013, this design is characterised by its curved mirror surfaces.

The Stone Portable is the latest addition to a collection of lamps and accessories made from white Morwad marble.

Tom Dixon presented the Portables for the first time at the brand's Salone del Mobile exhibition during Milan Design Week in April before officially releasing them in August.

In a departure from the brand's previous Milan exhibitions, the showcase placed focus on expanding the functionality and flexibility of existing products, rather than simply launching new designs.
