The International Sustainable Building Competition

Dezeen Competitions: The International Sustainable Building Competition recognises newly built and existing buildings from a range of categories that are outstanding examples of sustainable architecture practices.

The competition's winner will be announced during COP31, the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference taking place in Turkey from 9 to 20 November 2026.

Competition overview

The International Sustainable Building Competition will be held at COP31.

It will be open to participants from all countries, with the aim of promoting energy-efficient, low-carbon, climate-resilient, and sustainable building practices. It will also highlight the best solutions, and support their global dissemination.

Eligibility and judging criteria

Existing (in-use) and new buildings at the pre-occupancy stage are eligible.

Residential, office, hotel, and public service buildings – such as schools and hospitals – can participate.

Projects should demonstrate sustainable building characteristics and have the potential to serve as exemplary sustainability models in their respective countries. Applications must be submitted by an authorised representative of the building.

Judges are looking for projects that demonstrate strong, innovative and practical approaches to sustainable building, with measurable environmental and energy performance and the potential to serve as exemplary models for sustainable building in their countries.

Winning projects should demonstrate how sustainable design and building practices can be successfully applied in practice and provide transferable examples for the wider international building community.

How to enter

Applications must be submitted online by an authorised representative of the building, together with project details and relevant sustainability studies.
