Course details
School: The Bartlett School of Architecture
Course: Engineering and Architecture MEngArch
Type: Undergraduate
Location: London, UK
Course dates: September 2027 to June 2032
Application deadline: 13 January 2027
Course overview
The Engineering and Architecture MEngArch is a five-year integrated degree that combines architectural design and creativity with technical skills and engineering knowledge.
Developed in close collaboration with industry and experienced academics, the course equips you with practical skills to help you create innovative, sustainable and ethical solutions to respond to complex challenges in the built environment.
Based in London, ranked the best city for students in the UK and Europe (QS Best Student Cities 2026), you will spend most of your time working in design studios, led by our experts in architecture, structural engineering and environmental design, as you work through the full design process from drawing and modelling to making, testing, analysing and prototyping.
The course is delivered by the Bartlett School of Architecture. You will also benefit from expertise in sustainability from the UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering, and civil and structural engineering from UCL Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering.
We are ranked first in the world for architecture and built environment studies (QS World University Ranking by Subject 2026) and recognised for our forward-thinking approach to design.
What will I learn during this course?
You will learn to lead integrated design projects that address challenges in the built environment.
You will develop skills in:
- digital modelling
- simulation and prototyping
- using mathematics and computing to solve technical challenges
- communicating ethical and environmentally responsible design proposals
You will also learn to analyse structural and environmental performance, and design in response to the behaviour of materials, structures, environments and people.
What are the requirements?
A-level grades needed are AAA. No specific subjects are needed but please note the GCSE mathematics and physics requirements below.
If not offered at A level, a comprehensive portfolio of creative work is required upon invitation at the application stage.
GCSEs: English language at grade C or 4 and mathematics and physics (or double award) at grade A or 7 if not offered at A level.
What facilities and resources are available?
The course is based at UCL East in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, east London, where you will have access to specialist facilities, studio space and digital tools, including machine learning and geographic information systems (GIS).
You will also have access to B-made at 22 Gordon Street in central London and UCL at Here East in east London. Here East provides 4,000 square metres of space for fabrication, experimentation, testing and study, including laboratories equipped with digital and analogue fabrication tools.
What career prospects can I expect upon graduating?
Students graduate prepared for careers in:
- architecture
- civil, structural and building services engineering
- interdisciplinary design
- sustainability roles across the built environment
From more than 200 graduates of this course’s predecessor, Engineering and Architectural Design MEng, approximately one third go into architecture and one third enter engineering-related professions. Some work in integrated practices or other professions.
Many graduates forge new professional paths, developing collaborative and co-disciplinary abilities to work in infrastructure projects, client bodies, big-tech and governance.
Employers include leading engineering and design organisations such as:
- Arup
- Buro Happold
- WSP
- Mott Macdonald Ltd
- Laing O’Rourke
- Wilkinson Eyre Architects Ltd
- ZHA Architects Ltd
- CBRE
- KPMG
Others have used their degree as a foundation for further study.
