3-to-1 Pavilion
Temp has designed the 3-to-1 Pavilion, a sanctuary-like space in Shanghai, China.
3-to-1 Pavilion, a contemporary wooden tea sanctuary in Shanghai, harmonises geometry, materiality and light to explore the interplay of time, space and human connection.
The pavilion weaves a spatiotemporal narrative through triangular geometry, charred timber cladding and shifting light, guiding transitions from mundane to meditative while harmonising nature and human ritual.
Vertical louvres filter daylight, casting dynamic shadows that evolve with time and seasons, symbolising temporal flow and enhancing the pavilion's contemplative aura.
Charred timber cladding (via the 'yakisugi technique') merges function and symbolism: its waterproof carbonised surface evokes cultural themes of purification through fire, while the dark, textured facade harmonises with nature yet asserts architectural presence.
By orchestrating light, material and spatial progression, the pavilion blurs boundaries between daily life and ritual, inviting visitors to pause, reflect and reconnect with the environment.
This project has been shortlisted in the small project category of Dezeen Awards China 2025.
