House of Borrowed Scenery
Atelier Jingjing has designed the interiors of the House of Borrowed Scenery, a residential renovation project located in Beijing, China.
House of Borrowed Scenery demonstrates that the essence of spatial design lies not in mere transformation but in the integration of design and life by optimising the space to suit the residents' lifestyles, enabling them to enjoy a home that is uniquely theirs.
The house is located in a hutong neighbourhood of Beijing's old city, occupying an area of approximately 97 square metres, surrounded by a dense residential courtyard.
"During the site survey, a protected ancient tree, approximately 21 metres tall, was discovered in a neighbouring courtyard 32 metres to the south," said Atelier Jingjing. "This tree became a focal highlight of the design."
In traditional Beijing courtyard houses and communal yards, the courtyard serves as the heart of the design. In this project, the ancient tree provides a borrowed view, compensating for the lack of an internal courtyard.
As a result, the design adopts the concept of "borrowed scenery" by meticulously adjusting roof levels to address issues of light and spatial depth.
This project has been shortlisted in the home interior category of Dezeen Awards China 2025.
