Stockholm Design Week: Swedish designers Folkform have launched a furniture range that combines luxury materials such as Carrara marble and vintage leather with cheap imitation products such as laminate and fake leather.
Called Unique Standard, the range consists of a leather/fake leather bench (top image), a cabinet finished in Carrara marble and Carrara-effect laminate (above), and further cabinets that combine granite and laminate and Masonit and birch.

The new collection Unique Standard, questions our perception of various materials. What happens when we combine the original material with surfaces that try to imitate its appearance?

i like the use of reappropriated materials, but the saying “cheap” materials may be a turn off for some.

Creo que estéticamente son piezas “bonitas”, pero en cuanto a diseño, un tanto descolocadas, pensé que tras cada uno de los paneles que recubren a los gaveteros se escondería una gaveta o alguna cosa similar, colocarlos por el simple hecho de contrastar lo real y lo que intenta serlo es algo superficial. Distan mucho del mobiliario moderno y sus sucesores.
En tiempos de decadencia estética (como lo fue el rococó respecto del barroco y este del clásico) creo que las mejores alternativas se encuentran en una vuelta a la honestidad, con las correcciones respectivas producidas por la experiencia y la experimentación.

the bench is WOW. very chic. not sure if i like the rest so much.
I don’t feel masonite or MDF to be fake materials. Cheap materials yes, but not fake. Fake marble is fake, and so is laminate pretending to be wood.
the idea behind the combination of materials seems to be highly influenced by the memphis group of the 80′s
