Five years ago...

Five years ago this week, after just four months online, Dezeen already had a quarter of a million readers. We published our first story about a sex toy, as well as a globular building that Zaha Hadid had just designed for a square in Budapest.

A string of famous architects including Thomas Heatherwick, Will Alsop, Shigeru Ban and David Adjaye revealed plans to construct low-cost housing for families living in the shack districts surrounding Cape Town. We showed how some of them would look a month later.

Steven Holl was granted permission to build a centre dedicated to a Norwegian writer, which he went on to complete in 2009, and Tony Chambers was appointed as the new editor of design magazine Wallpaper*.
