Archtober brings month-long architecture celebration to New York City

Dezeen promotion: architecture and design events including building tours, lectures and parties are set to take place across New York City for the duration of October 2017.

The city's Center for Architecture will put on a packed programme for the seventh edition of Archtober, from 1 to 31 October 2017, in collaboration with over 70 partners and affiliates.

Archtober's Building of the Day tours will include Renzo Piano's Lenfest Center for Arts at Columbia University

Events across the five boroughs will include Building of the Day walking tours throughout the month, at locations from the Bronx River House and Staten Island Courthouse, to the Noguchi Museum in Queens and the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in Morningside Heights.

On the weekend of 14 and 15 October, Open House New York will provide members of the public the opportunity to see inside some of the city's best-known buildings, many of which are usually not accessible.

The Noguchi Museum in Queens is also on the Building of the Day list

A new series called Workplace Wednesdays will allow glimpses into the studios of leading architecture firms, with a different company participating each week to offer ticketed workshops, talks and presentations.

Classic Harbor Line's daily architecture boat tours will give facts about the Manhattan skyline from the water.

Seasonal events organised for the month include an architecture-themed pumpkin carving competition

Seasonal activities will include an architectural pumpkin carving competition, which is aptly named Pumpkitecture and awards the winner with the Pritzkerpumpkin.

Meanwhile, architects and designers can turn their skills to cakes during the Great Architectural Bake-off. A trivia night led by several industry experts, aimed to test knowledge on New York's built environment, will take place 6-8:30pm on 12 October 2017 at the Center for Architecture.

Coinciding with the month, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum will hold its National Design Awards Gala, and Docomomo US will host the Modernism in America Awards.

"Archtober 2017 represents the breadth and diversity of institutions engaging architecture and design across the five boroughs," said Benjamin Prosky, executive director of AIA New York and the Center for Architecture. "Our partners will present programs that energize the city’s design enthusiasts and professionals alike."
