Dezeen and The Mindcraft Project collaborate to present best of experimental Danish design

Dezeen has teamed up with Danish initiative The Mindcraft Project to highlight the work of the 10 innovative designers and studios in its new digital exhibition.

Going live from today, the Dezeen x The Mindcraft Project 2021 collaboration showcases new work by Danish designers each day until 26 March.

Presented by the Copenhagen Design Agency (CDA), The Mindcraft Project appeared as an annual exhibition at Milan design week from 2008 to 2018. CDA relaunched the project as a digital-only exhibition last year and is going digital again in 2021.

The design exhibition focuses on Danish practitioners working at the frontier of new fabrication technologies, while carrying forward the materials and processes of traditional craft.

It aims to showcase the explorative and experimental design happening at the junction of art, craft, architecture and technology.

"The material knowledge and technical proficiency that originates from craft is a strong part of the Danish design DNA," said CDA co-directors Kristian Kastoft and Anders Kongskov.

"In the upcoming exhibition, we will present projects that utilise new digital methods of designing and making alongside traditional craft disciplines in a cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary mix."

"The selected designers and studios are characterised by their experimental approaches, material knowledge and technical proficiency," they continued.

Among the designers chosen for the 2021 exhibition are Else-Rikke Bruun, who has created a piece of birch furniture that is woven like fabric; Rasmus Fenhann, who brings advanced technology to cabinetmaking; Bahraini—Danish, a studio that draws together the culture of two regions; and young architecture and fabrication office Archival Studies.

Experimental lighting design is explored by Kasper Kjeldgaard and Mette Schelde, while sculptural objects come from Stine Mikkelsen, the duo Frederik Nystrup-Larsen and Oliver Sundqvist, 3D-printing studio 91-92 (Ninetyoneninetytwo), and glass artist Stine Bidstrup.

Each designer's work will be profiled during the course of the collaboration via a series of videos, which will be published on Dezeen each day over the next 10 days.

This year's exhibitors were chosen with input from the CDA's new Curator Advisory Board, who Kastoft and Kongskov said brought "great insights in areas covering furniture, craft, art, architecture, technology and innovation".

The board members are Nicolai de Gier, head of Furniture and Object Design at the Royal Danish Academy and design director at TAKT furniture; Mette Barfod, editor-in-chief of Ark Journal; and Jamiee Williams, an architect, previously of SPACE10 research and design lab and CHART art fair.

The Mindcraft Project's 2021 virtual exhibition design is by Wang & Söderström, whose work often bridges physical and digital realms.

The studio, led by designer Anny Wang and architect Tim Söderström, also created the exhibition design and visuals for the 2020 iteration of the event.

The Mindcraft Project digital exhibition is online from 17 March 2021 at mindcraftproject.com.
