Doyeon Shin designs OLED television that unfurls like a flag

In this video, South Korean designer Doyeon Shin explains her flag-like design for a retractable OLED television, which is a finalist in Dezeen and LG Display's OLEDs Go! competition.

Doyeon's design, which is called Flag.R, makes use of the flexibility of OLED display technology to create a TV that rolls up inside a decorative object.

The design features a flexible OLED display that extends from a faceted cylinder finished with wood panels.

This cylinder sits on top of a pole, which is in turn mounted onto a stand that can be specified in a range of different colours.

With the screen fully extended, the design resembles a flag and can be used as a television. When the screen is fully retracted, it can function as a speaker.

Flag.R can also be used with the screen one-fifth exposed to display information such as track listings and lyrics.

"Flag.R is a rollable screen unit and audio speaker all in one," said Doyeon in the video, which Dezeen filmed in Seoul, South Korea.

"It's designed so that people can easily hide or reveal the screen and uses LG Display's rollable OLED display technology."

The design is one of five finalists in Dezeen and LG Display's OLEDs Go! competition, a global contest seeking innovative designs that showcase OLED technology in new and creative ways.

The competition brief asked entrants to create designs that showcase some of OLED technology's key qualities, such as its lightness and thinness and the possibility for OLED displays to be flexible or transparent.

The finalists were selected from 20 shortlisted designs, which included shelves that conceal a rollable screen, a table that doubles as a TV and an immersive baby crib.

The overall winner of the contest will be announced in June.

All of the top five designers will share in the prize pot of €46,000, with the winner receiving €15,000, the runner-up €10,000, and the remaining three finalists receiving €7,000 each.
