Competition overview
The Denver Affordable Housing Challenge invites architects, designers and urban planners worldwide to rethink how affordability and design excellence can coexist.
Organised by AIA Colorado, the City of Denver and Buildner, the competition seeks forward-looking proposals that respond to the city's urgent housing needs while contributing to a more vibrant, inclusive and resilient urban fabric.
Participants are invited to submit concepts at various scales – from innovative housing units to neighbourhood-wide strategies or policy frameworks – that offer new approaches to materials, construction, urban integration and sustainability.
The competition encourages solutions that are scalable, adaptable and deeply rooted in the specific environmental and social context of Denver.
Eligibility and judging criteria
The competition is open to any participant aged 18 and over.
Submissions will be judged on how coherent and compelling the architectural narrative of their ideas are and should be supported by site strategies, housing models and design detailing.
The jury seeks solutions that prioritise quality of life, community integration and environmental responsibility. Submissions should push beyond cost-effectiveness to explore how affordable housing can contribute to the city's vibrancy and sense of place.
How to enter
Participants are required to upload four A2 landscape-orientated presentation boards with sketches, renderings, plans, sections, elevations, diagrammes and/or other presentation tools to explain their proposal.
Submission deadlines
The final registration deadline is 18 September 2025, with the closing date for submissions on 20 October 2025.
Winners will be announced on 10 December 2025.
