Fernanda Canales has designed the House for the Elderly, which fosters well-being and community through accessible spaces, greenery and domestic-scale architecture around a central courtyard in Naco, Sonora, Mexico.
Located in one of Mexico's most marginalised towns, on the border with the United States, this community centre for seniors is uniquely characterised by its layout, which revolves around a central patio.
This project includes medical offices, living rooms, recreational areas, and workshops for physical activity and meditation. It also features a kitchen, a multipurpose room, a consultation room, restrooms, and changing rooms.
"This domestic-scale building was designed with accessibility and a sense of protection in mind," said Fernanda Canales.
This project has been longlisted in the leisure and wellness project category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
