Black & Milk has renovated the interiors of the Barbican Estate, combining subtle zoning, original features and sustainable materials within the constraints of a Grade II-listed building in London, England.
Black & Milk were privileged to undertake the renovation of a remarkable apartment within London's iconic Barbican Estate.
Overlooking the serene lakes and exclusive residents' gardens, this project presented a unique opportunity to craft a retreat for a newly retired couple, nestled in the romantic surroundings of their favourite Brutalist enclave.
However, a major constraint was the apartment's location within a Grade II-listed building, which prohibited structural alterations. This required a subtle, highly considered approach – one that favoured adaptive design over invasive intervention.
The result is stainless steel detailing, a steel kitchen worktop, Corian in the bathroom, PaperStone cabinetry and amber glass panels selected to echo the Barbican's industrial palette – while elevating it with contemporary tactility.
This project has been longlisted in the residential interior (small) category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
