MVRDV has designed Mega Mat, a vibrant installation made from over 500 recycled plastic mats, forming a traditional Thai gathering space.
Presented during Bangkok Design Week 2025, Mega Mat is a large-scale art installation, a gathering place and an 860-square-metre infographic.
Constructed from over 500 recycled plastic mats, this supersized 'Sua' (Thai for 'mat') references a Thai household essential with strong cultural significance, symbolising craftsmanship, simplicity and community.
Mega Mat's gradient of colours reminisces traditional Thai patterns, while visually representing the proportions of waste disposal methods, whether sent to landfills, recycled, or left uncollected.
After the event, the mats will be dismantled and given new life through donation or upcycling, extending both their lifespan and the installation's impact beyond its temporary showcase.
This project has been longlisted in the installation design category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
